Fiddle Fern
Nature Camp

Our mission is to help young children, ages 4 through 9, create their own sense of play, one that is open, imaginative, and carefree, all while being immersed in nature 100% of our day.

"This seems clear enough: When truly present in nature, we do use all our senses at the same time, which is the optimum state of learning." Richard Louv

Why young children need nature and free-play more than ever...

  • Outdoor play offers many benefits for children. It awakens all of their senses, encourages taking healthy risks, fosters strong whole-body growth, engages critical thinking, and it is so good for our children’s soul and mental health.
  • Unstructured play is essential for developing executive functioning skills. When children play freely—using creativity and imagination, collaborating, problem-solving, advocating for themselves, and entertaining one another—they practice and strengthen the critical skills of working memory, flexible thinking, emotional resilience, and self-regulation. When these skills are flexed in childhood, children carry them forward into every arena of lifelong success.
  • Children learn by observing and doing. By exploring, children have organic experiences with science without realizing that they are being scientists. They are immersed in different weather and temperature. They are surrounded with various vegetation, trees, dirt, water, and animals, and they are testing out forces of gravity, friction, tension, and momentum with water or objects, promoting curiosity and an open attitude to learning.
  • Taking care of our Earth is more meaningful when children have the opportunity to connect, appreciate, and have direct experiences with nature. Being immersed in nature through play helps them be stewards of our Earth.

Taking Risks

"Facing risk helps children assess the world around them and their place in it. Children love to see how high they can climb on a ladder, a tree, or a jungle gym. Over time they see their abilities grow, and they become ever more confident about stretching their boundaries and taking appropriate chances. They also learn about their limits and the consequences of going too far beyond their limits." -Joan Almon, Adventure: The Value of Risk in Children's Play

Children learn as they PLAY. Most importantly, in PLAY, children learn how to LEARN.”  -Fred Donaldson

What Will This Play Involve?

‍Since 2018, Fiddle Fern Nature Camp has served children during summer and school breaks. Campers have basked in:

  • playing in nature
  • riding scooters
  • hiking
  • embroidering
  • exploring in creeks
  • journaling
  • building forts
  • balancing on rocks, logs and trees
  • climbing trees
  • sewing
  • observing wildlife
  • rope play

Our day is rhythmic, starting with a greeting song and verse. We practice yoga and mindfulness, engage in developmental movements, and the children have many hours of free play time. There is storytelling during meal times, and we end our day with a closing circle to reflect on our play and share our gratitude. We guarantee that your campers will come home tired and happy!

“Play is the form of highest research.” Albert Einstein

We are confident!

After a fun-filled day of physical and self-directed activities, we are confident that your campers will come home tired, with stories to share, and very happy. They will want to come back for more because they are the boss of their play, they get to be in nature, be with their friends, and create practical sewing projects. They love looking for wildlife to imitate (deer, turkeys, peacocks, and critters that live in holes) that they see!

A day at Camp...

Testimonials

“Teacher Phu’s nature camp was one of the best parts of this summer for my children and myself. They climbed, played in the water, made forts with tree branches, and did small art projects and kept a nature journal. The kids enjoyed being with their friends and felt safe and comfortable. I will do it again next summer in a heartbeat.”

Mina

"Thank you for starting the camp.... it is exactly the type of fun, immersive, get beautifully dirty and blissfully exhausted, a small-group outdoor adventure we love for the girls. And of course, having a trusted friend and Waldorf mom lead the charge is certainly a great plus :-) Our girls THOROUGHLY enjoyed the day and can’t wait for the next."

Meera

“My daughter loved being at Phu's Nature Camp. It felt like an all-day playdate at the various open space preserves with good friends, that included everything from tree climbing and playing in creeks, to picnics and beautiful nature crafts. She wanted to go again and again.“
